A Life of "Artivism"

Her
Journey

Gabe Hurlock Tribe Arts Consulting LLC Founder

Gabrielle “Gabe” Hurlock, known in the art world as ERF.ANGL, is a passionate independent artist, writer, philosopher, entrepreneur, US Air Force Veteran, and the visionary founder of Tribe Arts Consulting LLC. As a Jamaican American raised in Metro-Atlanta, Georgia, Gabe was profoundly influenced by the vibrant history of the civil rights movement and the city’s unique artistic culture.

From an early age, Gabe sought solace in art, dance, and music, using them as powerful outlets for her passionate spirit and as refuges from feeling different. Her artistic journey was deeply enriched by her childhood memories of growing up with her immigrant grandparents and their cultural Jamaican values. They instilled in her a love for rich culinary traditions, community dances, and a deep pride in her heritage, all of which fostered her enduring love for the arts.

In 2008, Gabe joined the US Air Force, serving as an A-10 crew chief for nearly seven years, with tours across Europe, Asia, and Africa, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. Upon returning to the U.S., she found it challenging to adapt to a conventional desk job, prompting her to pursue her artistic talents. Gabe attended the Art Institute of Atlanta, earning a degree in Digital Filmmaking and Editing. Her freelance career blossomed as she edited short films, music videos, photography, and documentaries, while also exploring modeling and visual arts such as painting and sculpting. By 2015, she was inspired to create her own arts-based company, laying the foundation for Tribe Arts Consulting LLC.

In 2016, Gabe’s entrepreneurial journey took a significant leap when she was awarded the Veteran Posse Scholarship and attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, majoring in Philosophy and Dance. At Wesleyan, she refined her writing and innovative skills as a Patricelli Social Entrepreneurship fellow, mastering grant writing and business development. She made a substantial impact on campus and served as a teaching assistant for the Wesleyan Prison Education program, where she taught Philosophy and Ethics at Middlesex County Men’s Maximum Security Prison. Hearing the stories of prisoners incarcerated since their youth reminded Gabe of her own childhood struggles and illuminated the importance of early intervention in the school-to-prison pipeline. This revelation inspired her to build her business around supporting artists, organizations, and government agencies in delivering effective community solutions. Her "artivism" earned her the Edgar Beckham Social Justice in Art Award for her significant contributions to social justice through art on campus and in the local community.

The pandemic in 2020 reshaped the job market, prompting Gabe to take a bold leap and offer her services as an arts consultant. She distinguished herself as an innovator, hosting virtual workshops and professional development sessions with organizations in Brooklyn, New York, such as the North Brooklyn Coalition Against Family Violence and the Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York.

Returning to Atlanta in 2022, Gabe concentrated on building her business strategy, focusing on arts education and juvenile justice. Her role as a Program Coordinator with Raising Expectations Inc., a partner of the Atlanta Public School system, allowed her to address the "gaps" faced by marginalized youth and to see firsthand how impact organizations benefit from her innovative services. By 2023, Gabe fully embraced her calling as a business owner, establishing Tribe Arts Consulting LLC. Her company uniquely integrates her passions for art, community impact, and juvenile justice intervention, embodying her dedication to creating meaningful change through the arts.
